Presentation
There was a recurrence (2 or more episodes of uveitis) in 65.7% (25/38) of patients and 58.8% (20/34) of them presented some sequelae. [ard.bmj.com]
Patients with systemic disease may present with AU in about 27–40% of the cases. In approximately half of the cases with ocular involvement, the presentation is an acute, self-limited iridociclitis. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

- Anterior Uveitis
Extraintestinal manifestations include migratory polyarthritis, erythema nodosum, cholangitis, and uveitis. Usually the uveitis presents as non-granulomatous anterior uveitis. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Eye Pain
Symptoms may develop rapidly and can include: blurred vision, dark, floating spots in the vision, eye pain, redness of the eye, and sensitivity to light. With proper treatment, most attacks of anterior uveitis go away in a few days to weeks. [autoimmune.org]
Symptoms Patients with uveitis may experience sudden, acute symptoms that include eye pain, redness, sensitivity to bright lights, blurred vision and "floaters" that partially obscure vision. [hss.edu]

Approach to uveitis Clinical presentation Common symptoms of uveitis are blurred vision, photophobia, eye pain, floaters (floating spots), headache and injected conjunctiva. Usually in children can be asymptomatic. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Photophobia
Ocular symptoms may include dry or red eyes, foreign-body sensation, pruritus, photophobia, pain, visual changes, and even complete loss of vision. [aafp.org]

- Irritability
What is Uveitis Uveitis is swelling and irritation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye. The uvea provides most of the blood supply to the retina. [autoimmune.org]
Here are the common treatment options for each type of uveitis: Treatment for anterior uveitis, or iritis, includes dark glasses, eye drops to dilate the pupil and reduce pain, and steroid eye drops to reduce inflammation or irritation. [healthline.com]

- Confusion
In rheumatoid arthritis the white blood cells of the immune system become disregulated or “confused” and begin to attack the individual’s joints. [uveitis.org]
The presence of subconjunctival nodules that are mobile over the sclera differentiates nodular episcleritis from simple episcleritis.1,7 Both forms of episcleritis can be confused with severe conjunctivitis because of the bright-red appearance of the [aafp.org]

Treatment
Treatment The treatment of uveitis depends on the location of inflammation within the eye, the extent of inflammation, and the underlying cause. [hss.edu]
Response to treatment was good in 63.6% of patients (21/33), partial in 18.1% (6/33), poor despite treatment in 6% (2/33) and poor due to lack of adherence in 12.1% (4/33). [ard.bmj.com]
Treatment It is very important to distinguish between infectious and AU as the therapeutic approach and treatment is completely different. An infectious etiology always has to be rule out before beginning treatment of AU. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Etiology

Etiology is unknown in most cases of inflamatory ocular disease. [ard.bmj.com]
Categorization by etiological criteria may be appropriate in the field of uveitis as compared to other ophthalmologic subspecialties because of its significant degree of association with systemic disease (7). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Epidemiology
Epidemiology Incidence of uveitis has been reported to range between 17 per 100,000 to 61 per 100,000 (10–14). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Pathophysiology
Indeed, in the US, most uveitis is of noninfectious or autoimmune origin, with a majority of those cases being idiopathic.2 Pathophysiology The autoimmune mechanisms at work in the pathogenesis of uveitis are not completely understood; but it is known [europe.ophthalmologytimes.com]

Prevention
Seeking proper treatment for an autoimmune disease or infection can help to prevent uveitis. Uveitis in otherwise healthy people is difficult to prevent since the cause isn’t known. [healthline.com]
Care must be taken when prescribing steroids to prevent further thinning of the cornea. It is important that the patient receive a thorough ocular examination with frequent slit lamp follow-up evaluations. [aafp.org]
Not so fast, Kedhar says, because we lack hard evidence that they work to prevent or cure uveitis. Others also theorize that other measures, including eating a high-fiber diet, may also be helpful in reducing eye inflammation. [ucihealth.org]
This compromise is considered one of the principal causes of preventable blindness around the world (1). Eye inflammation can be the initial presentation in many autoimmune diseases (AD) manifesting as conjunctivitis, episcleritis, or scleritis. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
