Presentation
Here, we present a patient with no underlying disease and cutaneous ulcer caused by B. cereus. [bmcinfectdis.biomedcentral.com]
We present the case of a 13-year-old patient with severe skin and soft tissue infection due to Bacillus cereus who required surgical treatment, antibiotics administered intravenously and skin grafting. [medigraphic.com]
FDs present different causal agents, among them those of biological origin such as viruses, fungi, bacteria and parasites. Bacillus cereus is considered an opportunistic pathogen and producer of food poisoning. [go.gale.com]

Entire Body System
- Weakness
But you’re at risk of a more serious case if you have a weak or compromised immune system. Bacillus cereus not related to food poisoning (non-intestinal B. cereus) can cause more severe infections. [my.clevelandclinic.org]
According to the values obtained and following the manufacturer recommendation, the NHE production was scored as high (4–5), medium/weak (2–3) or not detectable (0–1). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Intravenous Drugs
Certain populations are at increased risk for B. cereus infection, including cancer patients, neonates, intravenous drug users, and patients with a history of trauma, surgery, or catheterization (3--6). [cdc.gov]
Predisposing factors include intravenous drug use, surgical or traumatic wounds, intravascular catheters and prematurity due to an immature immune response and to the presence of indwelling devices in the intensive care environment of neonates [16–18, [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Patient 33 was 24 year-old admitted at the emergency ward with abdominal pain, shivering, vomiting, fever and diarrhea. A blood culture was positive for this B. cereus strain. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Respiratoric
- Aspiration
For sample collection, aspiration was carried out using a needle (fine-needle aspiration) from the edge and under of the infection site. [bmcinfectdis.biomedcentral.com]

Psychiatrical
- Suggestibility
Professor Mike Catchpole, PHE Incident Director, said: Investigations to date have suggested the source of the Bacillus cereus infection that has affected outbreak cases was the contamination of intravenous liquid products during a single day of production [gov.uk]
All these similarities, and especially the M13 pattern, strongly suggested that the three isolates were identical and/or may descend from a same recent ancestor. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Isolation of three indistinguishable B. cereus isolates from three patients on two separate days suggested that this was a common-source outbreak and not a laboratory contaminant, even though the environmental source of B. cereus was not identified during [cdc.gov]
Recently, the ecological niches of B. cereus were suggested to include insects and nematodes guts ( Jensen et al., 2003 ; Ruan et al., 2015 ), or plant roots ( Ehling-Schulz et al., 2015 ). [frontiersin.org]
Neurologic
- Neglect
B. cereus was therefore neglected. However, a strain with identical profile was isolated one year later from a newborn (patient 21) leading to kidney and urinary infections. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Stroke

Workup
Microbiology
- Staphylococcus Aureus
It resembles Staphylococcus aureus (staph) food poisoning in its symptoms and incubation period. This is the "short-incubation" or emetic form of the disease. [textbookofbacteriology.net]
Foodborne disease outbreaks caused by Bacillus cereus, Clostridium perfringens, and Staphylococcus aureus –United States, 1998-2008. Clin. Infect. [frontiersin.org]
B. cereus was isolated from a blood culture, displaying also a coagulase-negative Staphylococcus. B. cereus was therefore neglected. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Treatment
Even with prompt surgical and antimicrobial agent treatment, enucleation of the eye and blindness are common sequelae. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Following consultation with two infectious disease specialists, treatment was performed with oral administration of ciprofloxacin (500 mg twice a day for 14 days). During treatment, the patient's ulcer commenced to heal. [bmcinfectdis.biomedcentral.com]
Management and Treatment How is intestinal Bacillus cereus treated? Food poisoning related to Bacillus cereus usually goes away on its own within 24 hours. Your provider may suggest: Getting plenty of rest. [my.clevelandclinic.org]
Treatment and drugs Most people recover without treatment. The administration of fluids is recommended if the diarrhoea or vomiting is severe. Antibiotics are not indicated as the symptoms are caused by the toxins and not the bacteria. [bccdc.ca]

Prognosis
You may also have a worse prognosis if you: Are a newborn. Are already hospitalized. Don’t start antibiotics promptly for a non-intestinal infection. [my.clevelandclinic.org]

Prevention
Prevention As B. cereus is ubiquitous in the environment, control measures should be focused on preventing growth of B. cereus and the formation of emetic toxin in the food. [bccdc.ca]
Their biochemistry and metabolism is included, as well as some biotechnological alternatives for prevention and contamination control in foods. Keywords: biosurfactants, bioconservation, food innocuousness. [go.gale.com]
